B. Voc.

Bachelor of Vocational Studies programme has been developed to make the new generation self skilled and dependable, so that they can learn and acquire skills in concern and interested field and have a better life in future. We all are aware of the present situation of our country; we are into the process of development and the peoples are not skilled for the industries that are into continuous growth.

So the Government of India started a project of Skill India to improve the skills of Indians to raise the standards of the Indian industries as well as the people. For this University Grants Commission (UGC) had launched a scheme in February, 2014. They introduced this skill development based program of higher education in college, leading to Bachelors in Vocational Education (B. Voc.) degree (3 year program or 6 semesters). In collaboration with National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) aligned skill development, students can exit after six months with a certificate (NSQF 4) or may continue for one year diploma (NSQF 5) or two years advanced diploma (NSQF 6) or three years B. Voc. Degree (NSQF 7). This programme is focused to deliver the National Occupational Standards (NOSs) along with broad based general education. This would enable the graduates completing B. Voc. to contribute significantly to India’s accelerating economy by gaining employment.

The Govt. of Himachal Pradesh had introduced this program initially in approximately 500 schools in the state targeting the students from 9th to 12th class. And the students who want to strengthen their skills can go for diploma (NSQF 5), or advanced diploma (NSQF 6) or B. Voc. degree (NSQF 7). To make this program effective and successful HP government had made different units like DOHE (Department Of Higher Education) and HPKNV (Himachal Pradesh Kaushal Vikas Nigam). HPKNV makes sure that the program is run smoothly and effectively by providing following:

  • Coordinating with DOHE in selecting facility
  • Monitoring skill components quality
  • Courseware
  • OJT and internship
  • Placement

The state government had started this B. Voc. Program to target following objectives:

  1. Provide mixture of professional skills along with education.
  2. Ensure that students have adequate knowledge and skills whenever they leave the program. (At any level)
  3. Giving students a chance to learn according to their requirements and feasibility.
  4. Provide better carrier opportunities to students after +2

HPU had started this program in 2017 in 12 colleges around the state which enables 3 types of students to join the program:

  • Students who already have acquired NSQF level 4 certification at school level
  • Students who already have acquired NSQF level 4 certification at school level but wants to change the stream
